Haiti Earthquake Two Years Later
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - On January 11, 2012, at the Chinatown Brasserie, Diaspora Community Services (www.diasporacs.org) will host "An Evening of Reflection and Gratitude" to mark the second anniversary of the earthquake which struck Haiti on January 12, 2010.
On the day the earthquake struck, Haitian families at home and abroad suffered devastating, unspeakable losses: severe destruction of public infrastructure, and irreparable rupture of families and communities. On that day, friends of Haiti came to offer support to stabilize the crisis and resources to rebuild. On January 11, 2012, we will pay tribute to both the survivors and the friends of Haiti.
"We are honored to have Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly and Rabbi Michael Miller among the friends who will join us. For the past four years Diaspora Community Services has been operating an urgent care multi-service medical clinic, Centre Medico in Nazon, Port-Au-Prince where we serve over 5,000 patients, annually. We couldn't do it without the support of our friends. This evening will give me the opportunity to thank them on behalf of my fellow country men and women", said Carine Jocelyn, Executive Director.
Diaspora was founded in 1981 as the Haitian Women's Program to assist the thousands of Haitian refugees escaping widespread poverty and political persecution at home for a better life in New York. Today, we serve thousands of low-income residents and immigrants in New York City seeking a way out of poverty, and families living below international poverty standards in Haiti rebuild their lives.
